Empowering the tourism sector on marine conservation

Tourism is one of the key pillars of the blue economy and plays a key role in the preservation of the oceans. As part of the recovery journey, the regeneration of coastal and marine ecosystems for resilience is of utmost importance.

Since 2020, over 500 tourism operators have been trained by REEF Conservation Society on protecting the valuable marine ecosystem and mangroves, and how to improve their sustainability actions; an attempt to educate the environmental best practices to all visitors and attract eco-minded tourists as well.

Improving Sustainaible Tourism In Mauritius through Greening the Value Chain of Tour Operators (SUS-ISLAND) is a Switch Africa grand project funded by the European Commission and led by Mauritius Tourism Authority. Its objective is to promote sustainaible tourism in Mauritius by demonstration and scaling up a self-sustaining mechanism for improving  sustainaibility impacts along the value chain improving awareness and market of sustainaible tourism products.
